The Speed Revolution: FedEx SameDay Local and the Future of eCommerce.
Last week, FedEx announced a new, same-day delivery offering that disrupts the expectations of the future eCommerce industry.
The launch of FedEx SameDay Local suggests the direction and speed businesses now require to stay competitive is increasing. Being adaptable, flexible, and customer-centric is a pattern amongst the most successful big businesses (Amazon, Uber, DoorDash). Convenience, speed, and control over when you receive your purchase will win over any customer considering other options.

What is FedEx SameDay Local?
Partnering with OneRail, a last-mile solutions provider, FedEx will now offer merchants a connection to 1,000+ couriers via AI orchestration. That means auto-matching, dispatch, and live pickup-to-delivery tracking for same-day & 2-hour delivery windows.
Other major companies offer similar same-day services, such as UPS, Walmart and Target. This domino effect of ultra-fast, trackable, and flexible delivery is a clear sign that the logistics world is catching up with the expectations of customers like Amazon's, who want faster shipping with real-time visibility.
What does this mean for merchants?
Offering same-day delivery is a proven sales driver, especially for retail, technology, and FMCG products. There are higher conversion rates for checkouts that offer instant delivery, with lower cart abandonment and increased returning customer rates.

Merchants can now offer ‘Amazon-level’ speed without building their own infrastructure. Small- to midsize stores can fulfil in-house, removing the need for third-party logistics (3PLs) or secondary warehouse operations.
However, fast delivery and automatic carrier assignment don’t remove the need for sustainable inventory and warehouse management. Merchants need to balance the offering of same-day services with the reliability of their fulfilment solutions. For instance, you need high accuracy, real-time visibility to ship products at this speed, or risk customers ordering out-of-stock items and expecting them a few hours later.

Is this the new normal?
Same-day or time-flexible delivery is no longer the exception for the majority of consumers; it’s an expectation. As retailers utilise services like FedEx SameDay Local, competition accelerates amongst businesses, and it’s catch-up or get left behind. But this speed, being a core part of the customer experience, is a logistics commitment. It comes with operational complexity, new calculations, and new expectations around accuracy and reliability. The smart way to stay ahead isn’t just adopting same-day shipping; it’s building the systems that make it sustainable.
