Xero is a public technology company founded in Wellington, New Zealand. The company has offices in New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, and South Africa. Xero offers a cloud-based accounting software platform for small and medium-sized businesses based on the software-as-a-service (SaaS) model and sold by subscription. With Xero, you can automate everyday business tasks, get up-to-date financials, and run your business from wherever you are in the world.
Its key features include automatic bank feeds, invoicing, accounts payable, expense claims, fixed asset depreciation, purchase orders, bank reconciliations, and standard business and management reporting. Xero has more than 200 secure connections with banks and financial service partners around the world. Additionally, the company offers a mobile app for iOS and Android devices called Xero Touch, as well as a free API that has enabled the integration of more than 700 external applications with Xero so far.
Xero was founded in 2006 by the former director of Trade Me, Rob Drury and Hamish Edwards in a studio apartment in Wellington (ironically, the number of the apartment was 404 – the ‘page not found’ error code on web browsers). Creating a software-as-a-service (SaaS) product was admittedly a perilous move. Software that is stored and delivered over the Internet rather than being installed on the customer’s computer was scarce for small business use – Xero’s targeted clientele – at the time. The term ‘cloud computing’ was to be introduced to the business world only a few months later at the 2006 Search Engines Strategies Conference, by Google’s then-chief executive Eric Schmidt.

Xero started its public life on the New Zealand Exchange in June 2017, supported by hundreds of retail investors that believed in Dury’s skills and vision, through a $NZD 15 million initial public offering (IPO). Nowadays, the company employs more than 2,500 people around the world and in 2019, Xero announced that they reached 1.8 million subscribers, as well as achieving positive free cash flow for the first time. Xero also supports the UK Government’s ‘Making Tax Digital’ initiative. In March 2018, Dury stepped down as CEO of Xero, continuing as a non-executive director. He was replaced in April 2018 by Steve Vamos.

DX Express and DX Freight Integration
We are delighted to announce that Shiptheory now offers integration with DX Express Services: DX Courier and DX Secure, as well as two DX Freight Services: DX 1-Man and DX 2-Man.
DX (Group) plc is a British mail, courier, and logistics company that provides a wide range of delivery services across the UK and Ireland. The company was founded in 1975, and it is based in Berkshire, with offices in Ditton Park (head office), Bristol, Northampton, Warrington, Willenhall, and Dublin. With a staff of more than 3,000 employees, DX’s network is covering the majority of UK and Ireland business and residential addresses. The company’s clientele ranges from companies like Argos, Timpsons, Marks & Spencer, Specsavers, and William Hill, to the UK Government.
The DX Group operates through two main divisions, DX Express and DX Freight. It also runs a private business-to-business delivery network, DX Exchange, that is mainly focusing on the legal, financial, and public sectors. DX Exchange is serving the majority of legal firms within the UK.
DX Express focusses on next-day or scheduled courier deliveries, and also offers secure services for the delivery of items of value. DX provides tracked, next-day delivery including premium morning and Saturday options and their B2B Customer Service teams are situated locally.
DX Freight provides next-day or scheduled delivery services for parcels and irregular dimension or weight items.
The 1-Man is a one-person, business-to-business service, focusing on next-working day delivery of any size or shape items up to 50kg.
The 2-Man home delivery service will deliver larger and heavier packaged goods into the customer’s destination of choice. The service provides up to 8 weeks of delivery dates along with an anticipated 3-hour delivery time slot on delivery day. Additionally, the service offers light assembly, wet installation of electrical appliances, as well as removal and disposal of old electrical items in accordance with the WEEE directive.
There are a number of items that the company won’t be able to transport. Find a list of prohibited goods here.
Each of these above services requires separate commercial agreement with DX and, as such, credentials for each cannot be interchanged. For example, DX 1-Man account details cannot be used to book DX 2-Man shipments via Shiptheory.
Connect your DX account with Shiptheory and ship faster and smarter, making it easy for your Magento, Etsy, Squarespace, or Shopify online stores, to automate their shipping process entirely. Create shipping rules based on the weight, value, destination, and contents of your orders, and Shiptheory will generate labels for your DX deliveries instantly.

The Evolution of Shiptheory's Shipping Rules System
When we originally built Shiptheory we knew from our time spent building Magento and general ecommerce shipping label extensions in the past that we had to have the ability to automatically select shipping services for retailers.
Our original rules system was pretty basic. It allowed you to select the service and some basic criteria such as a weight range and a value range, along with a set of countries to which this rule applied.
We gradually evolved the rules interface and implemented additional criteria. Early on, we added the ability to add postcode regions so certain delivery options were only used for certain postcode areas. We then expanded this to zip codes worldwide.
We have now expanded our rule criteria list to cover near all criteria to allow for powerful customisation of rules and scenarios
When we created the original rules in Shiptheory we had no automatic printing features. Automatic printing is when a shipment is created and the corresponding label is automatically sent to the relevant printer. Shortly after adding automatic printing, we also added the ability to nominate a printer to which the label(s) from a rule should print.
We've recently been working on creating a returns page that allows retailers to offer a simple, customisable and professional way for customers return goods. Retailers using our returns portal can select returns labels to be printed alongside their outgoing post. This allows returns labels to be included with orders, meaning customers can return an item without the need for a printer.
Rules now allow you to select returns labels to be included with the shipment
We've also added the ability to schedule when a rule will be executed, allowing retailers to specify when a shipment should be booked in with a carrier using terms such as "2 days' time", or "next Monday".
Natural language shipping scheduling added to rules
Over the years we've consistently received indirect requests for certain information to be tweaked automatically when retailers book things in with carriers.
We've now added this feature to Shiptheory, allowing retailers to modify details of a shipment automatically.
Whilst over the last few years we've built a large selection of rule criteria, scheduling and returns, we don't intend to stop there. Our aim is to constantly improve and add to our existing rules sets. So, if you have anything you'd like to see added then please let us know here.
Our great rules engine is testament to all our great customers who have provided us with feedback and suggestions, and so a big thank you to all our customers from us @ Shiptheory!
